Project Lombok was mentioned by my Java friends as another thing that might help OpenRefine with some good best practices and also helps new contributors as a bonus.
It could be worth adopting, sure. But I would ideally want to do that after the first stable 4.0 release, because otherwise this is going to generate quite a lot of code changes everywhere which will make it harder to merge changes from 3.x into 4.x.
