Adding Wikimedia Commons to Open Refine on Mac OSX Sonoma 14.6.1

I have written this post to help anyone else facing the issues which I had in installing the Wikimedia-Commons extension to Open Refine on my Mac running OSX 14.6.1 Sonoma.

When I downloaded the open refine.commons.zip and unzipped it (or opened with with Finder) it unzips as a folder called module with a datestamp of 04 Jun 2024 at 14:00

The structure is

module

  • externals
  • langs
  • MOD-INF
  • scripts
  • styles

The illustration on this page suggests that the unzipped folder should be named commons-extension.

I eventually worked out that I had to rename the unzipped module folder as commons-extension then move that to my work directory, having created a new folder there called extensions as there was no folder of that name there.

It now works.

I would suggest updating the documentation please to assist with others facing the same issues.

Hi Ian,

Thank you very much for the feedback, I'm sure this sorry situation must have confused many others before you. Let's make sure this is on the radar of @Sebastian and @Andre_Costa who are currently working on this extension. This should be a rather easy thing to document in the README and possibly to fix in the Maven settings so that a folder with the right name is generated from the start.
