👋 Introductions thread!

i tried outreachy but my inital application was not verified

i wonder where i went wrong

@Alice_Namubiru as Martin has said, OpenRefine isn't participating in Outreachy or Google Summer of Code at this time, and so I don't think we can help you with information about why your Outreachy application was not verified.

Hello OpenRefine community! I’m a software engineer based in Germany (Java, backend). Lately I’ve been getting familiar with the OpenRefine codebase and have started making a few contributions. Glad to be here.

Welcome to the project! Thank you for your contributions. They've been great.

Tom

Welcome! Your contributions are greatly appreciated and I’m looking forward to working with you.

Hi, I am Lalit, MERN developer.
I want to contribute to OpenRefine and aim for GSoC 2025.
Please suggest a beginner-friendly issue.

Hi @lalit-mehra703, welcome to the forum! We keep a list of good first issues on our issue tracker here: GitHub · Where software is built

It looks like we're running a bit low on those, so I'll try to add some today. In the meantime, please feel free to look over issues and ask about any that seem interesting to you!

Hello all! I’m Finch, a postgraduate researcher (PhD student) at the University of Manchester in the UK. I study how digital technologies like linked data, applied to library catalogue records, can help surface the contributions of marginalized people to early printed books. My background is in rare book librarianship. Without much code experience, I don’t anticipate contributing in that way, but I look forward to connecting with the community as I learn my way around the software!

Hi everyone :waving_hand:

I’m Sanket, a Java backend developer getting started with OpenRefine.

I’ve set up the project locally and recently opened a small pull request to improve defensive handling of malformed HTTP requests on the server side. I’m currently exploring the backend architecture and learning the contribution workflow.

Looking forward to learning from the community and contributing more over time!

Hi all….names Larry and I am a data analyst and found Openrefine while researching tools for data cleaning. My team works with different size files of customer product data for large national accounts which can be quite messy as there can be many persons entering the data into an ERP or other system with nothing in place for data governance. We use Excel exclusively and as most of you know Excel is as good as the data being used and is good at some things and not so good at others. So far it seems this tool is going to help us considerably in cleaning up our data in order to tell our customer a story of their data. Looking forward to conversing and learning much more.

Hi everyone

I’m Manik, a Java backend developer who recently started contributing to OpenRefine.

I’ve set up the project locally and explored the database extension module. I recently contributed a small PR to deprecate an unused command with proper version indication, and I’m currently diving deeper into the backend architecture and extension system to understand the design decisions better.

I’ve always been interested in tools that improve data quality and developer workflows, and I genuinely appreciate the thoughtfulness behind OpenRefine’s architecture.

Looking forward to learning more and contributing regularly!

Hi everyone,

My name is Isadora. I am a film historian teaching at the University of Amsterdam and so I have mostly used OpenRefine to clean messy data related to movies and connect to wikidata. I would love to get more involved in the community and have just made my first contribution by designing a reconciliation service for movies (I’d just made a forum post about it and then noticed I should probably introduce myself first). Looking forward to connecting with you all
