Normalizing astronomical photometric data

Hello – I am working with an ASCII file that contains photometric data of a transiting exoplanet. The x axis is time, the y axis is magnitude. The y data needs to be normalized by using part of the data. Which part? Its the part at the beginning of the data. Can anyone talk me through the process? The data in question can be downloaded here which is pointing to NASA Exoplanet Data Archive. The final data should look like the top panel of Fig. 2 in this paper (click right side for a PDF) by Collier Cameron et al. (2007) with focus on black solid data symbols. Ignore the + data.

Hi @AstroToby - can you explain a bit more about how the normalisation of the y data should be done? What calculation or change needs to be done to the figures in the Differential_Magnitude column, using what information from the header. Assume I know nothing about astronomical data (which I don’t) or statistics (which isn’t quite true, but assume I don’t!)

Also my immediate instinct is that a spreadsheet would be better suited to this task than OpenRefine, so I’d be interested to know what it is about this data that has led you to think about using OpenRefine to do the manipulation you need? That may help us understand what you need to do here
