Question: Did language detection ever happen? An extension somewhere?
That discussion (and the discussion in the associated pull request) is long, but does describe the current state of play. There is a language detection function, but its performance might not be as good as one would hope.

Given that language detection is indeed available at the moment, perhaps it would be clearer to the community if this issue was closed. A new issue could be created to address any problems the GREL function has (suggesting to replace the underlying library by another one, to remove the GREL function altogether, or whatever other course of action feels best).
