Will OpenRefine be part of GSoC 2026?

Hey Community,

I’m interested in applying to OpenRefine for GSoC 2026.

I know participation was skipped in 2025 due to a lack of mentors, so I wanted to check if the team plans to apply as an organization for 2026? I'd love to get involved.

Cheers!

Hi @shivvani, and welcome to the forum! Thanks for asking about this. I haven't seen any discussion so far, which might make it difficult to complete an application by the February 9th deadline. I imagine this will also be tightly linked to project funding for 2026, which is currently unclear.

That said, if you want to get involved in the project you can look through the open issues and comment on any that look interesting to you. It won't be the same level of dedicated mentorship that GSoC promises, but the community always is here to help contributors get started!

It’s early for me, but I’d be interested to define and mentor a food related project. Not sure if it would be proposed by OpenRefine or Open Food Facts, but I’m thinking about it. If other people here are interested by food data applications, let me know.

Hi all,

Regarding GSoC 2026: at this stage, we do not expect OpenRefine to participate this year due to the lack of available technical mentors, which is required to properly support students.

Thanks for your interest, and we hope mentoring capacity will allow participation again in a future cycle.
