πŸ‘‹ Introductions thread!

Hello

I'm Anas Adelopo, a product and graphics designer. I'm based in Nigeria :nigeria:. I'm currently a college student studying Veterinary medicine in Nigeria.

I've never gotten to work on open source projects before. I'm looking for ways to refine my skills by contributing to open source.

Cheers.

That's why i love the combination of prose and code in R Markdown and other notebook formats.
If one can take notes for each of the operations in OR and export the whole history including notes as a markdown file. I can imagine that would be helpful. Even more if one can import those markdown!

Welcome onboard @zoecooper ! I'm looking forward to working with you.

@Phu maybe we can continue this discussion in a separate thread and keep this one for introductions, no?

Hello all!
I'm Megan, a digital humanities librarian/archivist. Open Refine has been a huge help with metadata remediation for my organization following a DAM migration. I'm also having (too much?) fun using the reconciliation options to create datasets for visualizations and general metadata nerdery.

Hi, I'm John and I work in motion picture postproduction. During pandemic I had time to seek out ways to improve my ability to consolidate and analyse the very messy data that we receive from film and TV production and the editing process. By some extreme good fortune I found OpenRefine and it has transformed my life. In the distant past I was a developer so I just love the simplicity and straightforward documentation of GREL. I have no use for wikidata or reconciliation (yet) but I frequently 'cross' correlate my projects in many different ways, as well as making complex mathematical computations and syntax adjustments. I use the XML parsing tools extensively, and if I ever need to sift through an SQL database, I prefer to export the tables as JSON and then bring into OpenRefine where facets allow me to make proper sense of it. The developers are always very responsive and give good feedback, even for my less-good ideas

Hello everyone ,

I am Redeem Grimm, a Java Software Engineer and an Active Opensource contributor at ODK-X. ODK-X is a suite of tools that allows users to collect, manage, and visualize data in challenging environments. Openrefine is a powerful tool that enables users to clean, transform, and enrich data from various sources. I see a lot of similarities between ODK-X and Openrefine, such as their focus on data quality, usability, and scalability.

I am interested in learning more about Openrefine and how it can be integrated with ODK-X to provide a better data management experience for users. I am also eager to contribute to the development and improvement of Openrefine as part of the GSoC program. I look forward to working with the Openrefine community and mentors. Thank you for this opportunity!

@jquartel welcome to the forum, and thank you for creating bug and feature requests on Github

Welcome @Redeem_Grimm, and thank you for your enthusiasm!

You can read more about the 2024 GSoC program here GSoC 2024 Contributor Application Period. It also contains links to our documentation to make your first contribution.

I would definitely be interested in knowing more about how ODK-X users use OpenRefine.

Thank you @Martin

There are many ways OpenRefine is of great use to ODK-X users;

1. Data Cleaning and Transformation

  • To clean and transform data collected with ODK-X Survey or ODK-X Tables
  • To reconcile data with external sources such as Wikidata

2. Exploring and Understanding Data

3. Linking Data Across Surveys

Just to name a few use cases

Hello! I'm Max Ziff and I work with Charles Faulhaber on the PhiloBiblon project, a bibliographic database of (primarily) medieval Spanish manuscripts: https://bancroft.berkeley.edu/philobiblon/. We're moving that data to a wikibase instance; our target is FactGrid (FactGrid). We have been using OR as a key part of our workflow, but we are currently quite hampered by difficulty in creating a new project using the same schema as an old one, which we can do by hand but is laborious. We would love to be able to take an existing project (schema and all) and replace the underlying data with new data. Does anyone else have a workflow pattern like ours? In any case, I'm looking forward to meeting you all!
