Discussion

Barcamp

The Advisory committee approved the PR barcamp 2024 takeway blogpost

The group reviewed pending travel expenses. Martin is following up to collect the last travel expenses.

Mission Vision Project with Bocoup

Bocoup received limited feedback on their post. Martin personally reached out to 32 active contributors, but he did not receive any responses. As a result, Bocoup did not organize a focus group due to lack of interest from participants.

The advisory committee acknowledged that Bocoup performed their due diligence and discussed potential next steps for this project. We could

  • Use the upcoming user survey to collect feedback regarding the drafted mission and vision, and help with the survey design in general.
  • Ask Bocoup to help integrate the mission, vision, and value into OpenRefine strategic planning.
  • Invite Bocoup to revisit the mission, vision and value in 12 months, which will give the community time to put them into practice. The advisory committee is not interested in this option.

Martin will contact Bocoup with those options and ask Bocoup to include the Advisory Committee in the final handoff meeting.

Antonin Transition

The group discussed Antonin's transition plan in light of the recent update:

We do not have an official timeline for Antonin’s transition. He is currently on leave until September and his interaction with the project is limited to GSoC and WMSE mentoring.

The group discussed the task performed by Antonin as project maintainer as outlined in this post:

  • maintain the OpenRefine GitHub repository,
  • triage tickets,
  • review pull requests,
  • publish releases,
  • respond to security advisories,
  • participate in internship programs.
  • perform some bug fixes and light new feature development

Through the conversation, we identified no critical task that needs immediate attention from the maintainer, except for security advisories. There will be limited operational impact if the project runs without a full-time maintainer for some time. Martin outlined the project maintainer's role in keeping the community active and expressed concern about relying solely on volunteers for this task.

The Advisory committee will prioritize the hiring of a person for the maintainer role.

EOSS-5

The Advisory Committee and the project manager will prepare a no-cost extension request for the EOSS-5 grant.

Next for Martin

Now that the Barcamp is over and reporting is completed, Martin will focus on the following projects.
